This is very well written, Tom. Your encomium for your mother and your take on the political moment are poignantly synced. I share your aversion to the Dem post-mortem thing. Who wants to flail for mine years about how awful Trump is and then pivot to a circular firing squad targeting all the weaknesses in the resistance? It wasmt our fault, ultimately. We were outmatched by forces we were well aware of that nonetheless were buoyed by way more popular and populist support than we knew were out there. Who knew the nation would award a demented traitor the crown of king in an affluent democratic republic in peace time? What to do now is not so much to wait but to dig in and study: What were the affirmative reasons why we Americans embraced our very own Hitler figure? From here on it will be the disaffected from the tyrant's own ranks who will make the most compelling case for change. We did our bit, for nine long years.
You capture the sentiments of many, Tom. Well done. My condolences to you for the loss of your mother. At whatever age a mother leaves us, however anticipated it may be, the emptiness is still profound.
You effectively juxtapose the loss of your mother and her aspirations for a just society, with a nation's loss of its dignity and abandonment of its founding values through a short-sighted selfishness and greed.
What a wonderful piece, Tom. A strong woman to grow up with. May her memory be a blessing. But your words about what to do now in the face of this utter political and cultural disaster might be the most sane I’ve read yet.
Well said Charles. We are in agreement!
A beautiful essay.
Amazing read! I love looking up words I have never seen before. I am hoping the downslope does not end up with internment camps.
Thanks Steve!
A wonderful tribute to your mother .
So very sorry for your loss Tom. Your mom was clearly a big influence in your life in all things including politics. I really enjoyed reading.
Thanks!
